Infectious Barcelona: Diseases, Pandemics & Urban Planning through History
This course explores how infectious diseases have shaped Barcelona's urban landscape from Roman times to the modern era. We will study the historical impact of epidemics on the city's development, public health policies, and urban planning. Barcelona's rich history and vibrant culture provide a compelling case study for understanding the interplay between disease and urbanization. From the Black Death in the 14th century to 19th-century cholera outbreaks and the recent COVID-19 pandemic, each health crisis has left a significant mark on the city's structure and society. Through lectures, interactive discussions, and site visits, students will gain insights into the historical context and lasting impacts of these epidemics. We will examine the evolution of public health infrastructure, including the development of hospitals, quarantine stations, and sanitation systems, and highlight the role of scientific advancements in influencing urban policy and planning. By the end of the course, students will understand the historical relationship between infectious diseases and urban planning and appreciate the lessons these events offer for contemporary public health challenges.
