The Magic Fountain of Montjuic - Barcelona SAE Blog

This past weekend, I experienced one of most beautiful sights Barcelona has to offer. The Magic Fountain of Montjuic is truly magical. My friend and I heard rumors that this free attraction was a must-see and we decided to check it out for ourselves.

We met at Plaça Espanya by the Venetian towers and walked down the main walkway toward the mountain. On the other side of the busy road, there is an old arena. Fun fact about Barcelona: if you were hoping to see a bullfight, there are no more torros to be found here. Bullfighting has been outlawed in Catalonia and the old arena has now been converted into a bustling shopping center.

As we made our way toward the fountain, crowds of people moved in the same direction. Lots of events are held in this main city square because of its importance, central location and magnificence.

At the fountain, we grabbed a pair of bocadillos and climbed up the stairs toward the center of the steps facing the fountain. We had a perfect, comfortable view from there. Street performers entertained everyone while we waited for the sun to set and the spectacle to start.

When it finally did begin, we were not disappointed. The combination of all the waterfalls and water arrangements amazed us enough. The fountain sprays more than 2,000 liters of water into the air every three seconds. To add to the excitement, as the sky began to darken, the water lit up with different colors. The effect had a misty, ethereal glow in the night. I will have a hard time forgetting this memory.
