By JeLisa Smallwood a Barcelona SAE summer intern

Monday, June 24 was a holiday here in Barcelona to celebrate the birth of Saint John the Baptist. Great emphasis is placed on the Summer Solstice, which is reflected in their celebration with the use of fire, water, and certain herbs. Fire symbolizes purity, water symbolizes healing, and herbs symbolize remedy and enhancement of healing qualities. Most of the celebratory events take place on June 23. Some people told me from work and the program that the beach was a good place to see some events. So at about 8 pm on the 23rd I went to the Barceloneta area and walked around by the port and boy was there a lot going on. People had fireworks, there was music playing and restaurants were packed. On my way back I decided to walk towards Park Ciutadella since I hadn’t seen it yet. I didn’t have a chance to walk around like I wanted because it started to rain but I did get some good pictures walking on the street closest to the zoo. It is definitely still on my to-do list to go back to Ciutadella.
