Barcelona SAE knows the importance of exploring other areas of your host country, which is why Barcelona SAE students participate on at least one weekend excursion outside Barcelona per term; this week, it’s off to Madrid!

Our spring students are gearing up to head to Madrid, Spain’s capital city for the weekend of February, 24th-26th. Madrid is located in the Community of Madrid or La Comunidad de Madrid which is approximately in the center Spain. One of the most vibrant cities in all of Europe, Madrid has an inescapable energy that runs through its streets.

Madrid is well known also for its collection of fine art in what is known as its “Gold Triangle of Art”, the Prado, the Reina Sofia, and the Thyssen-Bornemisza. Among other attractions, students will experience include the Plaza Mayor, the Royal Palace (Palacio Real), or Retiro Park. Most of these beautiful landmarks were built in the 18th century during the reign of Bourbon monarch Charles III. Students will spend the weekend in this famously energetic city eating delicious tapas and visiting stunning historical landmarks.

Also on the trip will be a visit to Toledo, a city 70 km south of Madrid that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Being one of the previous capitals of the Spanish Empire this city was a place of coexistence between Christian, Jewish, and Muslim cultures, and is a perfect place for discovering much of Spain’s cultural background. Along with a guided tour of the city students will explore the Cathedral of Toledo, one of three 13th century high gothic cathedrals, with breathtaking stain glass windows and a remarkable incorporation of light and the structural achievements.
