Studying abroad is an experience that shapes you in ways you might not anticipate. When I first arrived in Barcelona, I faced challenges adapting to a new culture, lifestyle, and rhythm. Now, as I begin to integrate back into my routine in the United States, I realize how this experience has brought new habits into my life. Studying abroad is a special time when you have the opportunity to learn not only about a new culture and city, but also learn deeply about yourself. Naturally, throughout the semester I adapted to the ways of life in Barcelona, and I find myself wanting to bring bits and pieces of my experience back home. Here are the most important lessons and habits I’ve gained while living in Barcelona that I plan to implement in my life in the United States.

Embracing the Rhythm of Life

When I first arrived in Barcelona, the slower pace and rhythm of life were a difficult adjustment. People took their time with meals, enjoyed long conversations, and seemed far less hurried compared to what I was used to back home. At first, this felt frustrating. I was accustomed to a culture where speed and efficiency often take precedence over savoring the moment. Over time, I began to embrace the calmness and simplicity of life in Barcelona. I learned to appreciate the value of stepping back and living in the moment. Whether it was enjoying a coffee at a local café, chatting with friends for hours after dinner, or strolling through my favorite barrio, I discovered how important it is to take time to savor life. Time is limited, and every moment should be cherished. Back in the U.S., I want to implement this philosophy into my daily life by consciously slowing down, being present, and making time for the little joys that make life meaningful.

Cultivating Flexibility

One of the most valuable skills I honed in on while abroad was flexibility. Living in a foreign country meant navigating unfamiliar systems, encountering language barriers, and adjusting to cultural differences. Over time, flexibility became my number-one skill. This new mindset allowed me to adapt, problem-solve, and keep stress levels at bay. Back in the U.S., I plan to carry this sense of flexibility into my personal and professional life. Being open to change and ready to adjust to unforeseen circumstances are fundamental skills that go beyond studying abroad.

Dressing the Part

Barcelona’s fashion culture was an unexpected yet impactful aspect of my experience. People here have a unique sense of style, and being well-dressed is a daily norm. Whether you’re heading to class, grabbing groceries from the local market, or going out for dinner, everyone is always presentable and polished. When compared to how myself and my peers usually dress for school, it was refreshing to see this level of effort in daily appearance. Back home, I loved to dress up for specific occasions, but often I let the chaos of daily life get to me, resulting in prioritizing comfort over fashion. Taking pride in how I present myself became a habit, and it made me feel confident and prepared to take on the day. As I return to the U.S., I am excited to bring this back with me. Dressing intentionally, even for ordinary occasions, is a small change that makes a big impact.

Embracing Spontaneity

One of the most exhilarating parts of studying abroad was the spontaneity it allowed. Every weekend was an opportunity to explore a new destination, whether it was a short train ride or a quick flight to another European city. This spirit of adventure opened my mind to new experiences and reminded me how easy it is to experience new things. While I may not have the same accessibility of quick international travel in the U.S., I plan to replicate this sense of spontaneity in other ways. By prioritizing exploring my own hometown and state, trying new activities, or simply saying “yes” to unexpected opportunities, spontaneity can become a core habit in my life.

Final Thoughts

As I leave Barcelona, I am packing up my suitcase with not only many great souvenirs and gifts for my family, but also a toolkit with the habits and lessons I have learned during my time abroad. From embracing a slower pace of life to cultivating flexibility, dressing with intention, and seeking out spontaneity, my time abroad has been transformative. These lessons aren’t just memories I’ll cherish, they are new habits I will carry with me as I step into the next chapter of my life back home.
